Metricon Stadium (Carrara Stadium)

The history of Carrara Stadium is a long and storied one. For over 50 years, the stadium has been home to many sporting events and has undergone several facelifts. It is still an active venue for locals and tourists alike. Here is a short overview of the stadium’s history.

The stadium is home to the Gold Coast Suns of the Australian Football League (AFL) and the Gold Coast Titans of the National Rugby League (NRL). It has also hosted rugby union, rugby league, soccer, baseball, and track and field events. In 2019, the stadium was renamed Cbus Super Stadium as part of a 10-year naming rights partnership with Cbus Property.

Carrara Stadium was built in 1987 and was then known as Nerang Oval. Nerang was an important town in the area at the time, and people initially used the oval for local matches. In 1997, the name was changed to Carrara Oval when the Gold Coast Titans rugby team moved in. The Titans stayed for 10 years before moving to Robina Stadium in 2007. In 2008, Carrara Stadium underwent a $145 million redevelopment, increasing its capacity to 25,000 seats. The redevelopment also included a new Western Grandstand, corporate suites, and a media centre. The stadium was renamed Metricon Stadium in 2011 after construction company Metricon took over the naming rights.

In 2011, Gold Coast was awarded an expansion team for the AFL, which would be known as the Gold Coast Suns. The Suns played their first game at Carrara Stadium in 2012 against Essendon Bombers in front of 27,914 people. In 2013, works began on an $11 million redevelopment of the stadium, which added more than 5,000 seats to bring its total capacity to 25,500 people seated and 35,000 people standing. The redevelopment also saw the construction of new administration offices and function rooms for the Suns and upgrades to lighting and turf quality.

Today, Metricon Stadium is home to the Gold Coast Suns AFL team and hosts other events such as concerts and conventions. It is a popular venue for both locals and tourists alike.

Carrara Stadium has come a long way since its humble beginnings as Nerang Oval. Today, it is a modern and state-of-the-art venue that locals and tourists enjoy. It’s incredible how much this place has changed since it opened its doors in 1982! If you’re ever in Gold Coast, check out a game or event at Metricon Stadium – you won’t be disappointed!
